The Destination

Isla Holbox,
Mexico

Isla Holbox is a 26-mile sandbar off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. These protected waters are home to some of the world's most sought-after gamefish — and our guides have been fishing them their entire lives. This isn't a fishery we discovered. It's the one we were born into.

"Had an amazing day with grasshopper, he put me on big tarpon. He is very friendly and very dedicated. I broke my line (my only one) fighting a tarpon and we get back to holbox he take a sprint to his house and bring me his reel with another fly line. Thank you very much for the great day and i recommend him to everybody."

"Quelle pêche incroyable. Max est arrangeant et cherche des solutions à tous les problème. Son équipe est aussi extraordinaire, super sympathique, les gars connaissent leurs affaires, donne les conseils, travaillent fort à trouver le poisson! C'était un super moment avec une belle réussite: 11 tarpon, 2 snook, 1 jack en une demie journée. Merci les boys et attendez vous à me revoir à la saison des gros ;)"

"I brought my fly rod to Holbox on the hope that I might be able to squeeze in a little fly fishing while on vacation with the family. Max responded quickly and put me in contact with Angel "Grasshopper" on short notice. Angel is absolutely everything you look for in a guide. Not only did I have a great experience, I now have a new friend. Thank you Max and Thank you Grasshopper. -Dow"

"The walking tour was unique, fun, and enjoyed all of my time with Oscar. Oscar was patient and taught me a lot about the history of the Holbox area and put me on fish. Day 2 was on the boat with my wife — we both landed a tarpon! Grasshopper made every effort to keep us on fish. Both my wife and I got our first tarpon with Viva. I would recommend giving them a call!"

Plan Your Trip

When to Come

Tarpon are here twelve months a year — but the experience changes with the seasons. Here's what to expect:

Peak Season

May – September

Migratory Tarpon Run

The Silver King arrives in force. Fish from 80 to 200 lbs push through deep water on full sinking lines — the most explosive sight in saltwater fly fishing. This is what we wait all year for.

Year-Round Action

October – April

Juvenile Tarpon & Snook

When the giants move on, the mangroves come alive. Baby tarpon from 5 to 40 lbs, snook in the shade, and calm, uncrowded water. Consistent, technical, and incredibly fun on 8–9 weight rods.
