Safety & Health
Life Jackets & Safety
Life jackets provided on all boat trips. We follow all Mexican maritime safety regs. Guides carry first aid kits and radio comms.
Sun Safety
Days on water are 6–8 hrs of direct sun exposure. Reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen is essential. Lightweight long-sleeve shirts, wide hats, and shade umbrellas help.
Swimming & Wading
Baby tarpon trips involve shallow wading (1–4 ft). Basic swimming ability helps but isn't required. Kids wear life jackets during wading.
Fish Safety
Tarpon have rough mouths and can thrash. Guides handle fish; guests hold rods. No sharp hooks without supervision. Kids should listen carefully to guide instructions.
Bugs & Insects
Mosquitoes and sand flies are active at dawn/dusk. Bug spray (DEET-based), long sleeves, and hats help. Mangrove tours = more bugs than boat days.
Health & Meds
Bring any personal medications, seasickness meds, anti-diarrheal, pain relievers. Holbox has a small clinic; serious issues go to Cancún (1.5 hrs by ferry).

How to Get to Holbox
Isla Holbox is remote — and that's exactly the point. Here's how to get here from anywhere in the world.
Fly into Cancún
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is your gateway. Direct flights connect from most major US, Canadian, and European cities. The airport is well-served with car rental, taxis, and shuttle services right outside arrivals.
Cancún → Chiquilá (2.5 hrs)
From Cancún, take Highway 180 west then head north on MEX-5 toward Chiquilá. Google Maps works great for this route. You can rent a car at the airport (recommended), take a pre-booked shuttle, or grab a colectivo (shared van) from the ADO bus terminal in Cancún. We recommend Holbox Adventure for the best shuttle service to get from your airport all the way to your hotel.
Chiquilá → Holbox Ferry (30 min)
From Chiquilá dock, ferries run frequently throughout the day (roughly every 30–60 min) and cost around $100–120 MXN (~$6 USD) each way. The ride takes about 30 minutes across the lagoon. Cars stay on the mainland — Holbox has no cars, only golf carts. You can park at a guarded lot in Chiquilá.
You're in Holbox
Once off the ferry, you're steps from town. There are countless taxi golf carts and off-road vehicles that will take you to your hotel from the dock for between 100–200 pesos depending on the distance.
