Spring Fishing in Holbox — What's Happening on the Water
Spring is arriving in Isla Holbox, and with it, one of the most exciting stretches of the fishing calendar. The harsh winter winds are finally dying down, calm mornings are returning, and the flats are waking up. Here's what's happening on the water right now.
Residential Tarpon
The resident tarpon population in and around Holbox has been showing up consistently. These fish haven't migrated — they live here year-round in the lagoons and channels — and as the water warms into the 80s, they become increasingly active. Expect explosive surface feeds in the early morning and reliable shots on the flats by mid-morning. We're fishing them on big streamers and long leaders. Patience is rewarded.
Permit on the Flats
Permit season is underway. The big, nervous tails you've been reading about — they're here. The white sand flats north of Holbox are holding fish, and conditions have been almost perfect: light wind, clear water, and good visibility. Permit are never easy, but right now they're as willing as they get. We're presenting crabs on light tippet and taking our time with each shot.
Snook in the Mangroves
The mangroves are full of life. Snook are sitting tight in the shade, ambushing baitfish along the edges. These are technical shots — short, accurate casts in tight quarters — but deeply satisfying when you pull it off. The Mangrove Walking Tour is running well right now, and the fish are in great shape.
What's Coming
By late April, the big migratory tarpon begin arriving from the south. These are the fish people travel thousands of miles to chase — 100+ lb silver kings rolling in the channels, crashing through pods of bait. If you've been thinking about booking a trip, the window between now and peak tarpon season is the time to do it. Guides are available, conditions are good, and the fishing is only going to get better.
