August - October: Large Tarpon Migration

Recommended Gear for Tarpon Fly Fishing
Fly Rods
8-9 weight rods are ideal for baby tarpon in the mangroves. If targeting larger fish on the flats, consider a 10-11 weight. Fast action rods help turn over larger flies and fight strong fish.
Reels & Line
A quality reel with a strong drag system is essential. Tarpon make powerful runs. Use tropical saltwater fly lines (floating or intermediate) with at least 200 yards of backing.
Leaders & Tippet
40-60 lb fluorocarbon shock tippet is necessary to handle tarpon's abrasive mouths. 9-foot leaders tapered to 16-20 lb test work well.
Flies
Black/purple Toads, Peanut Butter flies, EP baitfish, and other tarpon-specific patterns in sizes 1/0 - 3/0. We provide all necessary flies, but you're welcome to bring your favorites.
Clothing & Sun Protection
Lightweight, long-sleeve sun shirts, wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses (crucial for sight fishing), buff or face covering, and quality sunscreen. The tropical sun is intense.
